Bellows Falls Union High School

Dear Families of BFUHS Students,

Please be advised that beginning on this Monday, March 1st, the Bellows Falls Union High School will transition to four days of in-person instruction for all students who are not already enrolled as a fully remote student.  What that means is that as of March 1st, all in-person students will be expected to attend classes at the school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  Until further notice, we will continue to schedule Wednesdays as fully remote days for all students.  There are a number of reasons why we are staying with the remote learning days on Wednesdays, which I will not address in this letter.

This is a decision that we have been contemplating since early January and which we have made with complete attention to COVID-19 and the necessary safety protocols that are currently expected of all high schools in the state.  We have also been attentive to the progression of COVID-19 within the state.  It is important to note that recently, the rate of positive test results in Vermont was 1.5%, which is down significantly from the 2.9% positivity rate in early January.  Additionally, the daily case count in Vermont is also down significantly from early January when we first started this conversation.  Finally, it is important to note that schools in Vermont have already established a great track record for keeping students and staff safe.  Here at BFUHS, we have had only one student in the building while infectious, which occurred nearly three months ago.  And even considering that one case, there has been no spread of COVID-19 at our school.

I want to close by pointing out that all of our current COVID-19 safety procedures will stay in effect during this transition and while we are still operating in this Hybrid Mode of school operations.  That means that we will still conduct health screenings, still maintain social distancing as required in all classrooms, and still wear masks.  We feel very confident that we can make this a successful transition.  We know that students learn best through in-person instruction.  We also know that it is still important to keep our guard up with respect to COVID-19 safety, following all of the state mandated guidelines for schools while they remain in effect.

In summary, if your student is not already on a fully remote plan, your student will be expected to attend school in person beginning next week, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, except when the school calendar has a non-school day.  To not attend on those days without a valid excuse would be treated as a truancy matter just as it would be during normal school operations. You cannot simply “choose” to work from home without a valid reason.  [Important note: Tuesday, March 2 is a day off from school for Town Meeting Day.]

Thank you in advance for your support of our efforts to work our way back toward a normal school experience.
