Mathematics
Mathematics is the doorway to all scientific and technical fields. Without a background in math, it is impossible to enter most vocations that are thought of as “technical.” Students need to realize, however, that many fields which are thought of as non-technical still demand a solid core of high school math subjects as an entrance requirement. It is important that freshmen prepare themselves for the most demanding areas that they may consider, so they will not be lacking in their requirements when they graduate from high school
In choosing mathematics courses, you should evaluate your abilities as well as the courses. In the opinion of the Mathematics Department, in order to learn mathematics, you must practice—and practice requires homework. The more advanced the course, the more work is expected. Proper selection of the courses, based on a realistic appraisal of your ability and motivation, will result in greater success and fewer changes in schedule.
Since mathematics requires that you master each step before going on to the next, the department strongly recommends mastery of standards (course) as a prerequisite for future courses in the sequence. Substandard performance would call for repeating the course to build a stronger foundation before continuing.
Scientific and or graphing calculators will be used extensively and one or the other is required. If a student plans to take Algebra II, the department recommends purchasing a TI-84 graphing calculator. If a student does not plan to take Algebra II, then a scientific calculator will suffice. Students may check with the department coordinator in the spring or the teacher at the start of the class to find out which brand of calculator is recommended.
The graduation requirement is 4 math credits including successful completion of Algebra I or the Algebra I part I and Algebra I part II sequence (which counts as 2 math credits). Additionally, successful completion of Pre-Calculus, in addition to two other credits in mathematics, may be used in lieu of the four credit mathematics requirement. This does not reduce the overall graduation requirement of 28 credits.
Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirements
In addition to traditional grades, students will also be assessed using proficiency indicators. Proficiencies include general skills as well as specific skills related to the content. Per VT AOE, the mathematically literate individual can reason quantitatively about patterns and shapes to analyze and solve real-world and hypothetical problems. They can use equations, data, tables, and graphs to validate hypotheses and model situations that individuals encounter throughout their lives. Additional proficiencies are outlined by the VT AOE for Financial Literacy: The financially literate individual uses knowledge and skills to manage resources effectively for career and workforce readiness, generational wealth building, lifelong learning, responsibility to community health, and a lifetime of financial security.
