Extended leaves and make-up work
From time to time, students take extended leaves from school. Pending administrative approval, leaves of this nature are considered unexcused. Here is the process to request each type of leave:
Family Vacation – It is appreciated if families can make every effort to avoid scheduling a vacation / time away while school is in session and we fully recognize that this will not always be possible. If a student will be absent from school for family vacation, notice must be provided to the attendance office, the student’s teachers, teachers, and the student’s School Counselor at least 5 business days in advance of absence to ensure there is a timely notice for independent work to be arranged and communicated. Requests made within five days of departure may not be honored. Keep in mind that while teachers have a general course of study, it is not always possible to anticipate the specifics of what will be covered and the student may be required to make up additional work when they return from the absence. In some instances, a student may be required to make alternative arrangements with their teachers to make up missed labs, etc. In all instances it is the student’s responsibility, as a high school student, to communicate absences and take the lead on creating a work plan.
Medical Leave – If a student needs to be absent from school due to a medical procedure, recovery from a procedure or extended illness, the family must provide the school’s nurse with documentation from the student’s doctor. Students and/or caregivers should communicate with their student’s School Counselor for assistance in making a make-up work plan. Medical leaves are generally considered excused.
Homebound and hospitalized students - According to state regulations, students are eligible to receive instruction at home or in a hospital whenever they are unable to attend school for 10 or more consecutive days because of a medical disability or pregnancy. Families should reach out to their child’s school when this is needed. The school will work with the Director of Student Support Services and/or District 504 Coordinator to develop a plan that meets the needs of the student and their ability to engage in learning. Please contact the Building Principal for additional information and support.
